DIY vanity: Girls bedroom — The Organized Mom Life (2024)

If you have little girls (I have 2!) then you know how quickly the bows, brushes, nail-polish, and necklaces can take over.

Which is why we decided to create a DIY vanity with tons of drawer storage to keep everything nice and organized in our girls’ bedroom:

Inside the drawers

Here’s everything that we keep in the drawer unit of the girls’ new vanity:

Drawer 1: Hair stuff

This drawer is for hair brushes, combs, ponytail holders, scrunchies…. everything hair related!

It makes it super convenient when I’m doing both of the girls’ hair in the morning, to have everything together in one place.

Drawer 2: Bows

Yes, we have another drawer entirely dedicated to bows!

Drawer 3: “Makeup”

When I say “makeup” I mean my kids’ version of makeup: Lotion, chapstick, and their play nail-polish. We keep the nail-polish in a zippered bag because, so far, my one-year-old hasn’t figured out how to open zippers.

Drawer 4: Jewelry

We used to keep the play jewelry with the dress up clothes. (See our dress-up organization here!)

However, it kept getting tangled and lost, so we dedicated a vanity drawer to the play jewelry, which works out much better.

Drawer 5: The treasure drawer

The treasure drawer is where the girls are allowed to keep any little toy or treasure that they want to. Mom and Dad won’t throw any of it away… as long as it fits in that one drawer!

If the drawer gets too full, they have to decided which treasures to keep, and which ones to let go.

How we built the vanity

To make this vanity, we bought a drawer unit at Michaels that was similar in style to the Alex drawers from IKEA, but shorter.

(We used three Alex drawer units to create an entire desk and art station in our basem*nt, and loved them, but they were a little too tall for what we wanted to do here.)

We assembled the drawer unit, but left the wheels off.

My husband cut a piece of white laminate to make the tabletop, and attached it to the wall and the drawer unit.

We found a stool and a mirror, also at IKEA, so of course there was some more assembly! Then we hung the mirror on the wall, slightly above the tabletop.

And that’s it! I love how it turned out, and how well it keeps all of the girls’ things handy, but out of sight.

Check out the supply list below for links if you’re interested in creating your own DIY vanity, and let me know if you have any questions.

Happy organizing!

-Laura
